Commission Info

Tue Dec 18, 2007, 6:25 PM
As has been requested, I've firmed up my commission pricing and information, and here it is. I'll be compiling a FAQ shortly, as well.

Commission prices are based on the amount of time and effort invested into the service rendered. From time to time, they may change to reflect time available, demand, etcetera. That's simply the nature of the beast. Listed prices are base-price estimates for individual portions of service. The details of a given piece may adjust the price upwards or downwards, depending.

I'll be updating with some samples as things come together.

By default, commissions are 2D digital media files at a respectable print size(usually 20" x 16" @ 150-300 dpi), licensed for non-commercial, limited lifetime use(commercial license and other rights are available, but the list here are private commission rates-- commercial use is a corporate service). Other arrangements, including print services may be available on request, and may necessitate an extra fee, depending.

Just about any piece of work here in my gallery can be considered a sample, and something in the same style is commission-able. Bear in mind, that most of the artwork I've done for myself(and quite a number of the commissions) here in the gallery come in at the upper end of the price range and well above the base rates listed below, due to complexity.

Inquiries/orders/etcetera should be made either through email at my website, or via private message here on dA. I check both regularly.

BASE COMMISSION: 25 USD
-Cleaned up pencil lineart, slightly rough. Single character, no background

INKED: +50 USD
-The base commission, gone over with clean, crisp digital inking

VECTORIZATION; +50 USD
-The Base commission is used as a basis for creating a high-contrast, "posterized" final product in a vector-based format. This basically takes the place of Ink and Colors.

COLOR, ROUGH: +25 USD
-"Loose" colors, often using digital oil paint or watercolor. A good match with the base commission's rough sketch.

COLOR, FULL: +50 USD
-Tighter colors than the roughs. Several options available: painted, cell-shaded, blended, airbrushed, etc. Note: Cell shading is in this category due to the clean lines and attention to contour required.

BACKGROUND, SIMPLE: +5 USD
-Simple background, but more than just a flat color or a gradient. Typically features a simple, but nice geometric fill of some sort.

BACKGROUND, DESIGN: +15 USD
-A bit more involved than the simple background, this involves some fairly major graphic design work(as opposed to painting). Posters are a good example of this category.

BACKGROUND, FULL: +20 USD
-The full-on background. Drawn, painted, whatever. Cityscapes, far-off mountains, forests, that sort of thing. Matches the style/lighting/etcetera of the foreground.

EXTRA CHARACTERS: +10 USD per "layer" per character; Full color, Vectored and Inked are considered two layers due to their exacting nature.
-Just what it says. Charge is applied per ink/color layer, IE: Base commission extra character is +10, Base plus rough color extra is +20(10 +10), Base with inks and full color extra character is +50 (10 + 20 + 20).

THE FULL MONTY: For those wondering what the "really nice stuff" in the gallery runs, most of those upper-end commissions have fallen in the 200-300 USD range. At those prices, corners don't get cut and a lot of bonus detail work happens, as well as some significant discounting for premium odds and ends. It may seem like a large pricetag, but that kind of money buys a lot of time and attention, and as I often start enjoying how they come together, often extra little freebies start getting thrown in, making it the 'best bang for the buck' option. The pricing above is really a guideline. For best results, contact me with what you're looking for and what your budget for the work is, and I do my best to fill up that budget with goodness.

MISC: +???
-These are *base* prices. Some commissions will demand a raise in price, due to complexity, fine details, difficult lighting or color effects, etcetera. These are always handled via communication, as they are difficult to predict, but will be settled BEFORE a commission starts so there are no surprises.

3D AND/OR ANIMATION PRICING: I don't do 3D or animated private commissions, usually. The reason is simply that the time investment in producing most 3D art makes the price prohibitive outside of commercial freelance work, and Animation is often in the same boat. One is *always* free to inquire, however.

PAYMENT: I usually take payment through PayPal, but other options, such as personal check or money order via mail are also accepted. Presently, payment for private commissions are due once the piece is done, and finalized deliverables are sent once it is received. this is for budgeting convenience of the client. However, if I experience any problems, I will change this to a less-abusable policy. I am willing to entertain payment plans if budgets are difficult, and will generally try to work with anyone that's having problems.

When in doubt, get in touch and talk things out. This information is only intended as a general guideline.
